The outskirts of Pittsburgh

After the stop at Pittsburgh, we cross the Allegheny River and make a ninety-degree turn across Interstate 279. One of the few chances to see the engines up ahead, so kids crowd the left side of the train. Pittsburgh looks like a reasonable city, I see a performing arts center and skyscrapers. Is this urban renewal, or was it paid for in the days when American industry was unsurpassed in the world?
