What remains of the once-extensive US passenger rail network is outlined in red. Amtrak trains run on a 22,000-mile network, of which 97% is operated over tracks owned by private freight railroads. My route from Boston to Seattle is outlined in blue.
The map is taken from the Amtrak national route map of the time period.
